"VAGABOND" finally on-line!

Vagabond from The Animation Workshop on Vimeo.

This is my final Bachelor film I worked between 2013 and 2014. I worked as a Storyboard Lead, Character Layout artist and Key Animator.

You can check out the "Making of" in my Showreel page above!

Internship work from Calon - Character Design

At Calon I also got the chance to work on character design for another series in development, currently under the title of "Bernie and the Boo Hoos". The series would be animated in 2D and aimed at pre-school children, with an educational purpose on first aid.

Here's the current concept:

Six year old BERNIE (BERNADETTE) makes some unusual new playmates whilst visiting her paramedic aunt BRIGID in rural Ireland. The BOO HOOS are aliens who're newly arrived on Earth from their home planet which has no gravity. As they approach everything they do with the boundless enthusiasm of young children this is a problem because they are always having accidents in Earth's less forgiving atmosphere.

Following are some of the concepts I drew under the supervision of Robin Lyons and Andrew Offiler.

Evolution of Bernie's design.

Different alien models.

More defined designs of three of the aliens.

Expressions.

A series of expressions done for a Q&A with my character, Eberhardt.

Range of movement and expressions

Once the character design is almost nailed down I proceeded to study what range of movement he would have and how his face would contort with different expressions.

Designing for "Vagabond"

First sketches I made while designing the main character of "Vagabond", the bachelor film I worked on.

More Brotherswing sketches.

This project is currently on a hiatus, as Dorte and I have to deal with the end of second year and preparing our pitches for the Bachelor project and other important things.

These are not really new, but they show what I have been doing with the characters lately. Enjoy! And click to enlarge!

Trailer project

Another late update, but here's a little bit of work I made for our first big 3D animation project. We formed a group of several pupils from both lines, the Character Animators and the CGs. Each group received as an assignment to analyse a given film, in my group's case it was the David Lynch classic "Blue Velvet".

It was a very interesting project, and very challenging to do. Here is some of the work I did as a character designer. Soon I will add the work I did as both as a storyboard artist and animator.

It was interesting to go back to my fine arts roots and rediscover artists like Gustav Klim, Egon Schielle and Francis Bacon. The characters ended up looking slightly different in the final result, especially regarding the asymmetry. But overall I'm satisfied with the work I did.

More free time doodles.

Hello! This time I bring you sketches I did towards the end of the first year, when I was super busy with assignments and exams. Some of them are even done in the airport while waiting for my plane back home!

Quick doodles of original characters and some movement sketches.

I drew Loki from the Avengers, i really like his design in the film! The man on the right is based on The Spine, a character from the whimsical musical band Steam Powered Giraffe. I recommend you guys to take a look at their songs and live performances, they are great!

Short short film time!

Around March/April of 2012 a group of pupils from BAC11 joined to make a short film with random style guides and motives. We were 3 CAs and 3 CGs in this project and we had to work with the styles of Ronald Searle and Tove Jansson, the mood was PHOBIC and the random element we were given was "the tyranny of small things".

After several sessions of brainstorming we decided to base our short film on a character (who ended up being an anthropomorphic elephant) who was terrified of little mice and rats.

I participated as a character designer for the elephant and as an animator during production. I also sculpted the main character in clay for better reference, but you will have to wait for the last showreel of first year ;)

First designs of the character when he still was
an undefined Moomin-like creature.

More sketches. The character begins to revert
to its original elephant form.

Character expression sheet based on the final model.

And here is the film! I feel really proud and satisfied with it, hope you enjoy it! (Warning: this contains some stroboscopic effects that may cause epilepsy and very loud volume)

More character sketches!

Classes are keeping me incredibly busy, but here's some character design sketches for future personal projects.

Mid-Autumn sketches

These are fairly old, but I rather like them and I wanted to show them around before they're way too old.
Body comparison between these two characters

Designs for Agatha and Gwen Takano: a ship captain and an alien warrior

gasmask study based on Chinese statues of lions and dragons

Self indulgent sketches

This last image needs a longer explanation. First page: looks like Callahan and Eberhardt are dressed up in stylish clothes, but this has resulted to be the origin of an idea for a possible story, currently in development with Dorte .You'll probably see some sketches about this very, very soon.
Second page is a mixture between character studies, thumbnails and silly doodles. The character with black eyes is from Beck's String Theory, a webcomic I earnestly recomend to all of you.

Doodles galore!

I was going to post my linetests from Mike Polvani's classes, but seems there's something wrong with Ernest. I can't export videos on avi, all I get it's a black screen...

While I try to fix this, have some more sketches from my first sketchbook (yes, I managed to fill a whole one in just one month...)
Study for my character, Agatha, and some doodles. Been watching "Carnivale", I recomend it to everyone.

Some rough designs for my blog header.

More designs for the headder, Callahan, Eberhardt, and nude models.

Doodling original characters

This is Dr.Eberhardt, one of my original characters. I'm currently developing his personality and backstory in a role playing game, but I love to experiment with facial expressions and body language with him. You'll see him around quite a lot.

The skinny man in the left is Callahan, Dorte´s character. You'll see him around too, I really like him.

Agatha, another character, currently developing

Another favourite thing of mine: drawing dynamic figures! Specially people fighting, they have so much life! She's another original character and here I try to study the way she would move as well as  her costume design. I'd love that jacket for myself, hehe.
